Sneak Preview: 2018 Vacation Camps

December 4, 2017 |

Learn how to draw and explore in Virtual Reality, craft and build in our well-equipped wood shop, try set-building and stop motion animation, design your own enchanted electronics projects — after a great pilot last year, Acera will be offering a variety of STEAM programs during both February and April vacation weeks in 2018!

A detailed line-up of the creative, unique programs you’ve come to expect from our school — for students 7 years and up — will be posted here by December 15. As usual we’ll have full and half day options available (you can browse dates, hours and other logistical details on our Vacation Camp page.) Below is a sneak preview at a special Virtual Reality program we will be offering for middle and high school students in both February and April.

Discover Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is quickly changing the way we interact with the world, and will be a major tool of the workplace of tomorrow. How can children learn to not just be consumers of the technology, but active creators? How does Virtual Reality work, what hardware is involved, and what does it take to program in VR? During February and April vacation, Acera will be offering two new, exciting programs creatively engaging students with VR technology and programming.

Drawing in Virtual Reality (10-14)
MORNING offering: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Imagine you can draw not just on the piece of paper in front of you, but all around you. You can paint a house, and then make it bigger and walk inside to draw a living room, a kitchen, the family dog. It’s called 3D drawing, and made possible by VR technology. Join us during vacation week to try it out: Learn about how Virtual Reality works, and how you can use it to draw and create art in entirely new ways. No prior experience required. Students must enroll for the entire week. Instructor: Gus Halwani, Ph.D., Director of Research, Acera School
Tuesday through Friday, during February vacation week
Monday through Friday during April vacation week

Introduction to Programming in Virtual Reality (12-18)
AFTERNOON offering: 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Are you interested in Virtual Reality, the technology and the principles behind it, such as optics, displays, tracking and major hardware platforms? Would you like to learn how to program a VR application? In this one-week class, students will learn how to design a virtual room and create a game in it. Next to learning about Virtual Reality and Programming for VR, students will be challenged to collaborate, investigate and create in teams, similar to how app developers work in the real world. Prior programming experience not required but a plus. Students must enroll for the entire week. Instructor: Gus Halwani, Ph.D., Director of Research, Acera School
Tuesday through Friday, during February vacation week
Monday through Friday during April vacation week

A pilot for these classes last summer filled up fast, so if you would like to pre-register you can do so by contacting us at enrichment@aceraschool.org.

Check out this video, which shows some of our day and summer students working in VR with the same tools we will be using during camp:
