Active, Hands‑On Math That Builds Understanding and Confidence

Students learn through puzzles, games, discussions, and investigations that make math active and joyful.

This hands‑on approach helps students explore patterns, structures, and ideas deeply - turning mathematical thinking into something engaging, creative, and meaningful.

"The level of flexibility of the school is really unparalleled, as well as the level of instruction. Where else can your 6th grader do Algebra II and Precalculus material? And not because the school is about pushing kids ahead, but because this is truly the right level for them, and they are enjoying it and are coming home energized and excited about their math classes (and even homework)?"

Custom‑Tailored Math Starts on Day One

Acera’s math program is built around one core idea: students learn best when instruction matches their readiness, thinking style, and curiosity.

From the first day of school, teachers use rich problem‑solving experiences to understand how each child approaches mathematical ideas. This insight drives placement, shapes instruction, and opens pathways into a wide range of math classes - from foundational number sense to advanced topics like calculus, discrete math, and number theory.

The nine sections below outline how this approach comes to life.

A Place Where Problem‑Solving Comes Alive

What if math class was a place where kids’ problem solving and deep thinking skills could come alive, and a place where they grow in their confidence and adaptability?

Placement Based on Readiness, Not Grade Level

What if math class placement could be based on what a student is actually ready to learn, rather than standard grade‑based curricula?

How We Begin the Year

At Acera, the school year starts with a series of math problem‑solving exercises, offered up in an encouraging way with adults who observe and coach them along.

Placement That Honors Each Child’s Capacities

And this, then, correlates with placement in math classes that honor their capacities and needs, instead of just their age.

A Wide Range of Math Classes

We typically offer 16 different math classes for our students, including algebra 1 & 2, discrete math, number theory, geometry, algebra 2, pre‑calculus, calculus and beyond.

How Ability‑Based Math Becomes Possible

Ability‑based math classes become feasible through a scheduling framework of holding math classes at the same time across multiple classrooms and multiple grades.

Courses Revisited Annually

Annually, we revisit which math classes we will offer each year to fit students’ capabilities.

Deep Engagement

Because children learn when they are engaged, we base our math program on problem solving that promotes active participation in a way that works for the age and style of the group. Using puzzles, games, discussions, group problem solving, and more, teachers create lessons that invite students to think deeply and be excited about math.

Flexible Pathways

Our program uses both the Common Core and MA State Standards as guideposts so students can move easily into their next steps after Acera. These guideposts serve as general markers - never limits. Teachers identify needs and goals and leverage a variety of curricula to define the best learning program for their students.

Real Learning

The emphasis is on learning in context and taking an investigative, hands‑on approach. Teachers have the flexibility to follow student interests, explore tangents, and bring in new topics as the year develops, ensuring math remains meaningful, responsive, and connected to how students naturally learn.

From Number Sense to Infinity: Deep Math for All Levels

We want all students to have a solid foundation in mathematics. In the early years, this means developing number sense, spatial reasoning, and a logical, coherent understanding of math. As students progress, number sense expands into fluency with fractions and decimals, followed by algebraic expressions and more abstract concepts. When students are ahead of guideline grade‑level guideposts, we continue to challenge them with high‑level material.

Teachers draw from a wide range of mathematical topics, including:

  • Patterns in sequences
  • Rigorous definitions of infinity
  • Building Platonic solids
  • Finding math in biology

This breadth allows students to approach problems flexibly, understand concepts deeply, and explore mathematics as a creative, expansive discipline.
