Lower School

Lower School
Overview
Age range

Grades K-5

Our interdisciplinary, project-based program, crafted by core teachers, uses thematic essential questions each year. Engaging inquiries like “What makes us human?” and “What defines a civilization?” drive authentic classroom discussions and purpose in learning.

Teachers adapt their curriculum based on class interests, ensuring academic growth and development of Core Capacities. Past units have included topics like civilization origins, energy and motion, ancient cultures, climate change, and structural engineering. Students participate in hands-on projects across disciplines, enhancing their learning through arts, sciences, and technology.

Core teachers collaborate to develop themed projects, which are assessed through portfolios and presentations.
Examples include:

  • Constructing bridges to demonstrate structural engineering skills.
  • Building scooters and seesaws to learn Newton’s Laws.
  • Creating a class play that explores societal differences.
  • Writing advocacy letters on U.S. Constitution issues and developing educational apps.
  • Designing mini-museums on geology and ecosystems.
  • Painting murals focused on environmental protection.
  • Implementing service learning projects to raise societal awareness.
Each year introduces fresh projects and possibilities, empowering students to engage, learn, and positively impact their school and community.
